Main Responsibilities of the role:
West London Synagogue (WLS) is Britain’s oldest and foremost Reform Synagogue with an international reputation for excellence. We have approximately 3000 members and provide a wide range of formal and informal Shabbat and festival services as well as a religion school, study and learning opportunities and youth activities. The role of HR Manager is a stand-alone role reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Synagogue.
*. Act as internal subject matter expert for all HR and employment related questions.
*. Provide effective and efficient day to day HR support to senior management, Heads of Depts, Rabbis, Board Members, staff and Employee Reps as required.
*. Proactively handle all employee relations issues, including grievance, disciplinary and performance issues
*. Support managers in the recruitment and selection of candidates for vacancies
*. Ensure all staff are appropriately “Right to work” and DBS checked, effectively inducted and any visa requirements managed.
*. Accurately prepare, maintain and improve all HR related documentation, including contracts, sickness and attendance records, joining and leaving paperwork, staff turnover and succession planning, diversity and gender pay balance etc
*. Manage, review and administer employee benefits including pension, cycle to work scheme, Lifeworks and childcare voucher scheme
*. Manage the annual and quarterly appraisal process, training managers as required.
*. Manage the training budget, advising on suitable training providers, especially the delivery of mandatory safeguarding and GDPR training.
*. Accurately maintain monthly payroll back-up paperwork and associated records.
*. Provide day to day advice on any GDPR queries that arise.
Education, Skills, Experience:
*. Preferably a CIPD qualified HR professional with prior stand-alone HR Manager generalist experience
*. Have the personality and work ethos which are conducive to working in a small faith-based charity, including the willingness of and capability to take on a wide range of tasks both administrative and strategic.
*. Have successfully helped to deliver numerous strategic HR projects
*. Possess strong communication and influencing skills
*. An innovative but balanced thinker with an ability to identify the root causes of issues and apply effective problem-solving skills
*. Is self-motivated and enthusiastic with a “can do” attitude, able to work independently but also as an effective and collaborative team member.
*. Trustworthy, diplomatic and responsible in handling sensitive and confidential information.
*. Have an interest in and ideally experience of working in the charity sector
*. Knowledge of Judaism is an advantage but not essential.
